Q: A few seconds after I was updating the firmware we lost power? Did this damage the printer?
A: No. The printer will retain its previous firmware version if there are any interruptions during the upgrade process.
Q: I am communicating with the printer through the 9-pin serial port but nothing will print. How can I test the printer’s port? I purchased the cable at Radio Shack.
A: All Datamax-O'Neil stationary and desktop printers have a proprietary pin-out on the serial ports. You cannot use a standard serial cable. You must either purchase a Datamax-O'Neil serial cable or make one according to the pin-out diagram. Refer to the Operator’s Manual for this diagram.
Q: I am switching to a new label and now nothing prints. The labels come out blank.
A: If your printer is set up for Direct Thermal, place a label on a flat surface. Use a coin or your fingernail and scratch the label applying some pressure. If the scratch mark is a light grey color then you have Thermal Transfer labels that require a ribbon. If the scratch leaves a dark black mark then these are Direct Thermal. Please contact Technical Support for further trouble shooting purposes.
Q: How long does the printhead last on your Class Printers?
A: The life of the printhead will depend on the actual usage of the printer. Datamax-O'Neil warranties all Datamax-O'Neil printheads for one year or one million inches limited warranty for any manufacturer’s defect. Factors such as humidity, dust, heat, moisture, and inappropriate usage (in-correct cleaning and abuse) will shorten the life of the printhead. Datamax-O'Neil advises regular cleaning of the printhead (outlined in the Operator’s Manual), be sure to follow proper use and handling to extend the life of your printhead.
Q: My display is on but there is no text. What do I do now?
A: Press and hold the “Menu” button on the far left side. Holding down the menu button controls the display contrast. This adjustment applies to ALL Datamax-O'Neil stationary printers with a Display.
Q: Where can I download the printer drivers?
A: You can download the Windows Printers Drivers from the Technical Resources section.
Q: Some settings were changed in my printer. How do I set it back to factory defaults?
A: To set the printer back to factory defaults, hold down the Pause, Feed, and Cancel buttons simultaneously while powering the printer up. Hold these buttons down until the “System Reset” message is in the display and then release the buttons. This will set the printer back to its default settings.
Q: I was printing labels fine and had to cancel a batch so I could start a new batch. All the text is printing very small. What happened?
A: Some third party software packages do this. Just close the current label format that you have open and then open this same format and try printing. You should not see this problem again.
Q: How often should I clean my printhead?
A: When using Direct Thermal labels you should clean the printhead after every roll of labels. When using Thermal Transfer with ribbon then clean the printhead when you install a new roll of ribbon. If the printer is in a dirty environment then we recommend cleaning the printhead on a daily basis.
Q: Does the A-Class emulate the Sato® printer language?
A: Currently we only emulate the Zebra® and Intermec printer languages. Sato emulation will be available at a later date.
Q: How do I clear “Close Head/Cover Fault”?
A: With labels and ribbon loaded correctly, make sure the printhead is locked down and the cover is closed. Then press the “Feed” button one time.
Q: How do I configure the “GPIO PORT” in the printers menu?
A: These settings are proprietary to the applicator itself. Contact the Manufacture/Reseller of the applicator for these settings.
Q: I am replacing several old Zebra® print engines with the A-Class. I have several boxes of Zebra® ribbon. Can I use these in the Datamax-O'Neil A-Class?
A: Yes. All A-Class printers have a “Unidirectional ribbon hub”. You can use either Coated Side In or Coated Side Out ribbon.
Q: I need to change the printhead on my A-Class. Should I check the voltage or check any settings in the menu?
A: No. When replacing a printhead you simply remove the old one and install the new one. This applies to all printers in the A-Class family.
Q: What adjustments are there for “ribbon wrinkle”? My labels are 3 inches wide and my ribbon is 4 inches wide.
A: Datamax-O'Neil recommends that your ribbon be 1/8th of an inch to no more than 1/4th of an inch wider than your label. Any size over this can cause ribbon wrinkle. However, there are some adjustments that might resolve your issue. Please contact Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support for these procedures and adjustments.
Q: I would like to install the Remote Display Option on my entire A Class print engines. Can I use the current displays I have or do I need to order all new displays?
A. You can use the displays currently installed in the printers. All you need to order is the Remote Display cable. That part number is DPO78-2516-01. *For warranty purposes, this must be performed by a Datamax-O'Neil Certified Technician*.
Q: My main drive roller is worn and needs replaced. Can I change it with one of the other 3 rollers?
A: Yes. However, you will also have to change the gears as well depending on which roller you select. The rollers are interchangeable but the gears are not except for the rear roller. That uses the same gear as the main driver roller.
Q: I have a very old PE42 that I’m replacing with a new A-Class. The applicator port on the A-Class is not the same as the PE42. Do you have a converter cable available?
A: Yes. That part number is DPO32-2562-01.
Q: What type of cables can I use to connect the printer to the computer?
A: All E-Class printers come standard with USB, parallel, and serial ports. The more popular connection is now USB since many computer manufactures do not build new computers with the serial and parallel ports. If you should need to use the serial port connection, you must either purchase a Datamax-O'Neil serial cable or make one according to the pin-out diagram. Refer to the Operator’s Manual for the pin-out diagram.
Q: What type of labels and/or ribbon can I use with the printer?
A: All E-Class printers come standard as direct thermal. Direct thermal labels have a special coating that turns black when heat it applied and does not use ribbon. The printer can be configured with a thermal transfer option that will allow the printer to use ribbon. There are many different types of labels (gap, reflective mark, and continuous) and ribbon (wax, resin, and wax/resin combination,) the printer can accept. The printer can support label widths from 1 inch to a maximum of 4.3 inches wide. Any ribbon used MUST be CSI (Coated Side In). For further assistance please contact Datamax-O'NeilPrinting Supplies.
Q: Why is the printer going into “Fault” right out of the box?
A: The printer might need to be reconfigured for your application. The defaults of the printer are Direct Thermal and for Gap/Edge labels. If you are using a ribbon or a different type of label, those settings may need to be changed. There are other possibilities as well. You may wish to contact your Reseller or Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support for assistance.
Q: What can I do to get the print to be darker?
A: If you are using Thermal Transfer labels with ribbon then make sure you have the correct combination. Certain label/ribbon combinations are not compatible. If you do have the correct combination then increasing the Heat setting in your Software should resolve your issue.
Q: Why is the printer going into Fault when I just moved the printer to another location?
A: Be sure that you are using the power adapter that came with the printer. Many other devices have a similar power connector that gives it just enough power to turn on. But when a print job or something that requires it to print or even just feed a label will cause it to go to fault.
Q: Why is the printer going into Fault when I replaced the ribbon?
A: Check the way the ribbon is being routed. If the ribbon is loaded incorrectly, the label sensor eye will be covered and cannot read the label correctly.
Q: I have replaced the labels and now it only feeds out blank labels when I try to print. What could have caused this?
A: There could be a few reasons why. Try pressing and releasing the F1 & F2 buttons at the same time. If it prints out a sample label then maybe something needs to be changed in your label software or the printer driver.
If the sample label does not print and the label is still blank:
If your supplier says you do have the correct combination then increase the Heat setting in your software. If none of the above are successful then contact Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support.
Q: Everything was printing fine and nothing with the ribbon or labels have been changed. It is now going into a fault when I try to print or feed a label.
A: First try restarting the computer and printer. If that does not solve the problem it could be that the sensor eye has gotten dirty or something is covering it. Turn the printer off and try cleaning it with some compressed air and removing anything that may be stuck on it.
Q: Why doesn’t the label feed out far enough so I can tear it off?
A: This is the Default setting for your printer. You can change this in the printers internal Menu or make this adjustment in your Label Software Package. If you wish to change this in the printer then refer to the Database section in the Operator’s Manual.
Q: Why is nothing printing on the right side of the label?
A: The thumbwheel probably needs to be adjusted or the printhead is not fully locked into position. On the right side of the printhead carrier you will see a round, green wheel with numbers on it. Rotate it counter-clockwise to a higher number so it will apply more pressure to the right side of the printhead. If you are using narrow labels, rotate it clockwise to a lower number to avoid abrasion damage to the platen roller. Please refer to the Operator’s Manual for instructions and diagrams.
Q: Can I change the font size of the text in my LCD display?
A: Yes, you can change the font size by pressing the down arrow button while the printer is in the “Ready” mode. A magnifying lens icon will appear on the LCD screen when the large font size is enabled. You can switch back by pressing the down arrow button again to return the font to its Factory default size.
Q: Can I display my company logo in my H-Class LCD screen?
A: Yes, you can upload a personalized logo in your LCD screen. The image file must meet the following requirements; the image should be a 2 bit, black & white bitmap (BMP), image size should be 312 pixels x 94 pixels. Save the image file to a SD card or a USB memory stick in a folder called "H" on either device. This must be created on a pc. You MUST name the file "logolab.bmp". Connect the device into the correct port on the printer. Once connected, cycle power to the printer and the H-Class will locate the image on your memory device and display the image on your LCD screen. To save the image to the printer, navigate the printer’s menu to printer options>modules>copy file, and then copy this file to the printer’s flash memory (i.e. Module G). The image will be displayed each time the printer is powered on.
Q: How do I save different sensor type settings so I do not have to calibrate the printer each time I change from gap labels to reflective or to continuous form tags?
A: You can create different configuration files for different types of media and save these settings in the printers Flash Memory. When the media is changed, this configuration file can be selected without re-calibrating the printer. To create a configuration setting you must first configure a media type and then calibrate the printer. Then navigate the printer’s menu to Advanced Menu>System Settings>Configuration File>Save Setting As. Name the setting with a name you can easily identify with the media type. You can create different configuration files for different printer settings and recall them at any time by selecting “Restore as Current” by following the above menu navigation.
Q: Can I use a Standard USB Keyboard to access the printer?
A: Yes, you can use a Standard USB Keyboard to manipulate your printer, from navigating thru the menu system to running Internal Variable Replacements to print labels. Please call your Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support Representative for details.
Q: How do I capture a HEX Dump file in the printer?
A: First set your printer to “File Capture Mode” by navigating the menu to Advanced Menu>Diagnostics>Hex Dump Mode, then select File Capture and press “Enter”. When exiting the menu you will be prompted to “Save Changes”. Press “Yes” and the display will now read Hex Dump Mode. Send a format/file to the printer that you wish to capture. The file will be saved in your Flash module* as a DMX_xxx_xxx file.
**A USB Flash Memory Module/Stick is needed to perform this procedure.
Q: How do I set my printer to display the advanced menu?
A: Make sure the printer is in the “Ready” mode and navigate the menu to Systems Settings>Menu Mode and select Advanced Menu. Once you press “Enter” the printer will automatically return to the Ready screen.
Q: Can I use Coated Side Out (CSO) Ribbons on a Standard H-Class printer?
A: All H-Class printers Thermal Transfer assembly is designed to run both the Coated Side Out and Coated Side In ribbons. No printer adjustments or software adjustments are required.
Q: I ordered an H-6308 and it does not have the 2 USB slots on the front of the unit. Should I have received them with this printer?
A: No. Your printer is a “Short” H Class. The USB/SDIO is an Option on the Short models. It is standard on all Tall models.

Q: My printer is displaying “Position Fault”. What is causing this?
A: The printer was unable to find the Top of the next label. Press the FEED button to clear any related fault conditions. If the condition persists it might be necessary to calibrate the printer. See the Operator’s Manual for this procedure.
Q: Can the I-Class accept label formats created in the Zebra® print language (ZPL™)?
A: Yes, All I-Class printers (other than the I-4206 and I-4208) can be configured to use ZPL data streams. A firmware upgrade is required, the firmware can be downloaded here.
Q: How do I perform a Quick Calibration?
A: The printer is calibrated to sense a wide range of media. Calibration fine-tunes these settings for your die-cut, notched, or reflective application. (Not required for continuous media.) Perform this calibration during initial setup or after changing your media type. Ensure that media is loaded and that the Media Sensor is adjusted correctly. Then, with the printer Ready, press and hold the FEED button. Allow at least 3 complete labels to advance then release the button. Upon successful completion, CALIBRATION COMPLETE and then READY will be displayed.
Q: One of the latching pins that lock down my printhead broke off. Are they easy to replace?
A: No. We do have a kit available but you must have a machine shop with the correct tools to replace them.
Q: I have several older I-4208 units with a Nic Card. We purchased a new 4208 and it shows “4210” in the display when I turn it on. Is this a mistake?
A: This is no mistake. When customers order an I-4208 with our new Nic Card we ship them an I-4210 at no extra cost. Our new Nic Card is not compatible with the I-4208’s main board. You should not see any difference between your older models and this new one.
Q: Our Company uses both the I-4208 and I-4308 for printing our labels. One of the 4208’s does not work. Can I use the platen roller from that unit to replace the worn roller in my 4308?
A: Yes. The same platen roller is used in ALL I Class printers.
Q: The Internal Rewinder is not rewinding the labels like it normally does. It is very old and I’m guessing it is bad. Are they easy to replace?
A: Yes. There are only 3 screws that mount the housing to the center plate of the printer. By removing these 3 screws you pull the entire assembly out and then install your new one.
Q: I have some very old I-4206’s that I’m replacing with the 4208 model. A few of the older models still work fine. I replaced the printhead in one and now all I’m getting is black lines. Could this new printhead be bad?
A: No. Chances are you have the wrong printhead. Older models of the 4206 about CY2001 & earlier have some different electronics and they are not compatible with our new printheads. The part number that you need is DPO20-2262-01.
Q: My printer is not printing all the way across my label. Do I need to replace my printhead?
A: No. Check the leveling cam located below the printhead latch on the printer. Make sure that the green “thumb screw” is towards the back of the printer and tightened down. If not, this will cause your printhead to lift up on the right hand side causing no contact with the media. Refer to the Operator’s Manual for this adjustment.
Q: My label doesn’t come out to the perforation on my M-4210. How do I fix this?
A: By default, the label should come out to the tear off spot. Check your “Present Distance” setting in the menu. This is located under Print Control/Present Distance. By setting this to “Auto”, your label will be presented to the tear off location.
Q: Some of the settings were changed in my printer. How do I set it back to factory defaults?
A: To set the printer back to factory defaults, hold down the Pause, Feed, and Cancel buttons simultaneously while powering the printer up. Hold these buttons down until you see a fault message on the screen or, for non-display models, the pause light goes off. This will reset the printer to factory defaults.
Q: All three LED lights are illuminated on my printer. What does that mean?
A: This means that there is currently a problem with the printer. Call Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support to have this problem further evaluated.
Q: I want to use my printer with Direct Thermal media. Is that possible?
A: Yes, all M-Class Mark II and previous M Class model printers can print using Direct Thermal labels. Direct Thermal is standard on all Datamax-O'Neil stationary printers. Thermal Transfer is an Option and requires ribbon.
Q: My ribbon keeps wrinkling and causing voids in my print? How can I fix this?
A: This depends on the size of your labels and ribbon. Datamax-O'Neil recommends that your Ribbon be 1/8th of an inch to no more than 1/4th of an inch wider than your label. Any size over this can cause ribbon wrinkle. However, there are some adjustments that might resolve your issue. Please contact Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support for these procedures and adjustments.
Q: I can access the M Class from a web interface but it asks me for a password. What is the password?
A: The password is sysadm.
Q: My printer feeds too many labels at a time and then gives me a “TOF Fault”. What is this fault and how do I clear it?
A: TOF Fault stands for a Top of Form Fault. The printer is having a problem detecting your label type/size. For immediate resolution please call Datamax-O'Neil Technical Support.
Q: Can I print Internal test labels from my M-4206 non-display printer?
A: Yes. With the printer turned on and only the Ready light on, pressing the Pause and Feed buttons together and releasing will result in a Sample label. Pressing the Feed and Cancel buttons together and releasing will result in a Configuration label.
Q: I purchased an M-4206 to replace my old Allegro. The labels are not printing correctly. Is this the correct replacement printer for my Allegro?
A: Yes, all printers from the Allegro family can be replaced by the M-Class family.
There is an “Emulation” setting that needs to be changed in the M-4206. Refer to the Operator’s manual or call our Technical Support Department for further assistance.
Q: I loaded the tickets in the printer and when I press “FEED” multiple tickets advance and I get fault.
A: Reposition the media sensor to be in the middle of a “quiet zone” (no preprinted artwork – refer to your Operator’s manual for this area) on the bottom of ticket. Remove your tickets and turn off printer. Lock the printhead mechanism down and turn the printer back on. After the printer powers up all 3 LED’s will turn on. Load your ticket stock and the printer will perform the Auto-Load function. If the problem still persists you can refer to the trouble shooting section in the Operator’s manual or contact Technical Support.
Q: When I print my tickets the print position is too high/too low. What can I do to fix this?
A: With the printers Power and On-Line lights on, press the Pause/F1 button one time. This will take the printer Off-Line. Press the Test/F3 button several times to see how the Internal Test Tickets line up. If these test labels do not line up correctly on your ticket they you need to perform the Start of Print/Cut-Tear Adjustment. Refer to the Operator’s Manual for making these adjustments. If you need further assistance then please contact our Technical Support Department.
Q: I am using Bartender software to print to my S-Class printer. When I try to print some tickets, only numbers and characters are on the ticket – basically garbage. What am I doing wrong?
A: Your printer may be set to DTPL. Refer to the Operator’s manual for changing this to DPL. This is listed under the Parser Mode setting. (DPL is Datamax-O'Neil Programming Language and DTPL is Datamax-O'Neil Ticketing Programming Language. DTPL is for BOCA™ emulation)
Q: I recently bought a brand new S-Class printer and noticed that it has a new USB port on the back. I looked at my older S-Class printer and it only has Parallel and Serial. Why is that?
A: In 2007 the S-Class printer was upgraded to conform with ROHS standards. With that upgrade there is now a USB port, 9-pin Serial port, Parallel port and more Flash memory on this new main board.
Q: Can I use gap labels with my S-Class printer?
A: No, you can only use reflective labels (with black mark) and continuous ticket stock.
Q: I have ticket stock with the black mark on the top. Is it possible to use S-Class printer for this type of ticket?
A: Yes, you have to order the S-Class printer with the Top TOF Sensor Option.
Q: When my printer prints and cuts tickets they fall all over the place. Is there a way to have the tickets come out neatly, instead of scattered?
A: Yes, you can purchase a cutter tray and add it to the printer (ST models only). The part numbers are: DPO15-3081-01 Cutter Tray, 2” and DPO11-5228-01 Cutter Tray, 3.5”.
Q: I lost the keys to the lock on my S-Class printer and now I can’t open the cover. Can I get replacement keys?
A: Unfortunately not. Contact Technical Support to get RMA/REP. The printer must come back to Datamax-O'Neil unless you have a Master Key available.
Q: I replaced a Boca printer with an S-Class and nothing prints. I made sure the S-Class was set to DTPL and I am using the same BOCA parallel cable. What else can I try?
A: Boca has their own proprietary parallel cable and it will not work with a Datamax-O'Neil printer. You must purchase an IEEE 1284 parallel cable if you want to use the LPT port. You can purchase this cable anywhere.
Q: What is a Head Up fault and how do I clear it?
A: A head Up Fault occurs when the operator unlatches the print head for any specific reason. It prevents the motor from engaging while the printer is being serviced or loaded with fresh media. The fault is cleared by closing and latching the print head, then pressing the Feed button once.
Q: Which printer do I purchase as a replacement for my Titan 6200?
A: The W-6208 is a direct replacement for the Titan 6200.
Q: Can I use the same serial cable on my W-Class printer that I used on my Legacy DMX 600/800 printers?
A: Yes. The serial port on the W-Class has the same pin out connectivity as the Legacy 600/800 printers.
Q: Can I print on Direct Thermal (DT) media on my Thermal Transfer W-Class?
A: Yes. After inserting the DT media, use the Menu key and navigate the menu to, Media Settings>Media Type. Use the Pause or Feed buttons to change Thermal Transfer to Direct Thermal. Press the Enter key (Cancel) to select the change, then use the Menu/Escape key to exit, press Enter when the printer prompts you to Save Changes.
Q: My W-Class printer will not print on my new Direct Thermal (DT) labels, but prints perfectly on Thermal Transfer (TT). Why?
A: Most likely, the media you are using is not DT media. Place a label on a flat surface and scratch it briskly with a coin or fingernail. If the scratched area changes color to a dark gray or black, then the media is DT. If you only leave a shiny scratch mark or there is no color change, the media is TT and requires a ribbon.
Q: The W-Class printer is currently connected to a desktop PC via the parallel port. Can I install my printer on a LAN?
A: Yes. There is a DMXNet II Internal Print Server Option that allows the printer to be networked. This is a plug in option that allows you to set an IP, Subnet, Gateway address and any other settings required by your network. There is a possibility that you might have to upgrade the printer’s firmware.
Q: My W-Class printer is going to be shipped to Germany for our office to use. Can we change the display to use German instead of English?
A: Yes. The printer supports five different languages. In the Systems Settings Menu, scroll thru and find Menu Language, press Enter, scroll thru and find Deutsch, select Enter. Then Escape and save changes when printer prompts you to save changes.
Q: My W-Class printer randomly skips a label when printing. My labels are notched on the left edge. What can I do so the printer doesn’t skip labels?
A: If using a notch for TOF registration, make sure the sensor’s electronic eye is adjusted to the left edge so the eye mark on the sensor is in the middle of the notch. The eye mark is a vertical indent mark in the plastic case about ½ of an inch from the right end of the sensor. If adjusting the sensor position doesn’t solve the issue, perform the 3 step manual sensor calibration described in the Operators Manual under Media Settings/Sensor Calibration.
Q: Our W-Class printer prints one label and skips a label consistently. What is the problem?
A: You need to find out if the printer is the culprit or if it’s a formatting issue. Simply press the Feed button once. If the printer feeds one label and stops, the problem most likely is the Software. Check the print registration on the label. If the print stops too close to the trailing edge or goes into the gap, this causes the printer to feed the remainder of the blank label. The solution is to move the print down toward the leading edge of the label. It is preferable this be done using the Software program. The printer can also be configured to move the print using the Print Control/Custom/Adjustments/Row Adjustments menu function. A “minus” value moves the print down and a “positive” value moves the print up.
