Software Architect IV - CA

The Software Architect IV / Embedded Programmer at Datamax-O’Neil will work as part of an integrated team with software engineers and engineers from other engineering disciplines to deliver products and services to our customers.

This Software Architect role provides design guidance within the software function of a product team. He/She will work with the product and project management functions to analyze customer requirements in order to lead the high-level software design activity for the resulting product. To a lesser degree they will also write, debug and troubleshoot source code as part of new product development and product maintenance activities in support of Datamax-O’Neil products.

The Software Architect IV is the technical leader of their software development team. These activities are targeted at the embedded environment in support of new machines in the Datamax-O’Neil product line.

Essential responsibilities include the following:

• Lead the definition of the high-level design (architecture) for the embedded software of the assigned product and participate in high-level design activity of other projects within the function as required. Provide complete orchestration of new software development activity as well as trouble shooting of any software problem within the scope of the assigned project.
• Set up an environment for automated builds using Jira and Bamboo.
• Set up an environment and modify for automated unit testing.
• Assist with the definition of standard practices and procedures within the company division and promote their usage within the project teams. Contact with others is with the technical community of the associated project as well as the assigned product manager to refine software requirements for the team.
• No direct supervision of technical work required. Normally receive no direction on routine work or new projects/assignments. Expected to direct the activities of others as determined by management.
• Provide high-level estimates for the software activity of the assigned product. Assist other functions and project manager with overall project estimates as well as the planned implementation of the software as needed.
• In collaboration with program, product, and project management, capture and document customer requirements (the operational specification) for the complete project. Analyze customer requirements to develop and maintain software functional specification for the assigned project with the guidance of project management. Ensure synchronization of software functional specification with other engineering disciplines.
• Analyze customer requirements as required to lead the high-level software design (architecture) activity for the resulting product.
• Provide high-level software design (architecture) recommendations for other projects within the division. This involves effectively communicating the business benefits of the technology platform and technical solutions to management, customers, and engineers.
• Lead detailed reviews of high-level software design (architecture) for current products as well as products in within the company division and participate in all reviews of software design for current product.
• Ensure peer reviews across the product are occurring at the necessary frequency.
• Mentor software engineers within the company division in the area of high-level software design (architecture) as well as software development process.
• Investigate, evaluate and implement through experimentation new development tools and technologies
• Work with other software architects and engineers across Product Identification Group (PIDG) to investigate and evaluate software development process improvements to sections of current product.
• Occasional travel will be required both domestically and internationally

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

• Proven / Strong design experience in Real Time Embedded Systems
• Proficient with Methodology within C++ Object-Oriented Analysis and Design
• Experience with automated code-generation tools is strongly desirable.
• Proficient with C to C++
• Highly skilled in design and debugging of Multi-threaded architectures.
• Proficient in various software development processes and strong knowledge base / understanding of the proper process to use for the assigned product.
• Proven ability to investigate and design with third-party libraries.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Communication mechanisms and protocols.
• Proven ability to assist Electrical Engineer(s) with component selection (e.g. cost v. performance tradeoffs) and architecture. (e.g. usage of PLD/FPGA v. firmware development)
• Demonstrated proficiency with project planning tools and techniques.
• Proven and well developed communication skills: ability to clearly and effectively transfer knowledge to various technical and non-technical associates, peers and senior management, including presentations
• Proven ability / experience to ‘take ownership’, drive the software design process, and demonstrate their passion / commitment to meet required specifications, objectives and deadlines
• Self-driven / motivated and resourceful to achieve set goals independently as well as being an effective Team Player

• Demonstrated experience/proficiency using Greenhill Tools and Integrity Operating Systems & ARM

• Bachelor of Science Degree (Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering) with a minimum 7 years of professional/Software Architect experience in a Global Software Engineering, Manufacturing organization or
• Masters Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering and minimum 5 years of professional experience in the Software / Manufacturing industry is acceptable.
• On-going, advanced coursework to keep current in field of Software Engineering is important and desirable
